Review from Andrea Lee@OrganicBeautyLover.
Intro
I've been using the JOVS laser device called Blacken DPL Laser Photorejuvenation, and while I've done plenty of reviews on skincare tools and devices, I'm really excited for this JOVS DPL laser device review. Other than the LYMA laser, I haven't really come across at-home laser devices. It's always been more commonly used skin tools like microcurrent, radiofrequency, and red light therapy.
At-home laser isn't talked about as much and I have to say DPL laser is my 2nd favorite skincare technology behind LED light therapy. Read on for my JOVS device review on their latest Blacken DPL Photorejuvenation device and use JOVS discount code OBL to save $50 (free global shipping).
About JOVS Beauty
JOVS first launched their hair removal device Venus Pro in 2018 which was the first device of its kind to combine sophisticated hair removal plus skin care technology with a sleek ergonomic design. Up until then, most hair removal devices caused pain, or even damage to the skin, and were bulky.
Within months, JOVS Venus Pro became one of the top- selling IPL hair removal devices in the US, Europe, Korea and Japan.
The design immediately makes it stand out from the crowd of IPL hair removal devices, so it's no surprise it was also the first hair remover to win the Red Dot Design Award.
I'm not sure how familiar you are with in-office laser treatments, but if you are then skip the next few paragraphs.
To understand what this JOVS laser device is, I feel like you first need to understand what a laser treatment is. All these popular devices like NuFace microcurrent and red light therapy masks are all based off of treatments that you could only get done by a professional at a clinic once upon a time.
Generally, a professional laser treatment at a dermatologist office will cost at least $500-$600 for a single session and you're supposed to purchase a bundle of 3 or 6 to get a proper round of treatments.
Here's how an in-office laser session typically goes. A topical numbing cream is applied to your face and you wait about 20 minutes for it to kick in. Then they begin the laser treatment by zapping your skin at a specific level deemed suitable for your skin.
It feels like a rubber band slap against your skin each time along with a burning sensation that's relieved by a fan blowing cooling air into your skin throughout the session. Afterwards, your face feels a bit like it's on fire. Depending on your pain tolerance, the pain can range from super intense to mild.
The JOVS DPL laser device is similar to a laser treatment you would get in the office. You need to wear eye protection and each time the light flashes you feel a slight rubber band-like snap on the skin. The JOVS device has a built-in sapphire cooling surface to help reduce any discomfort, similar to how a cooling fan is used in an office.
What is JOVS Blacken DPL Photorejuvenation Device?
DPL precise narrow spectrum technology with 3 modes for targeting specific skin concerns:
- Brighten mode: helps brighten your complexion and improve dullness
- Redness mode is for reducing your facial redness(only for capillary vessels)
- Whiten Mode is for reducing hyperpigmentation and acne marks
What is DPL? How does DPL Technology work?
DPL stands for the Dynamic Pulsed Light Facial, which is an advanced treatment putting laser and intense pulsed light(IPL) together to treat skin problems such as melasma and tired skin. You might have heard it referred to as a "photo-facial." DPL is a non-invasive and non-ablative treatment.
Getting a little technical here: DPL covers a narrowband spectrum of 500-600nm or 550-650nm and the light can penetrate the skin one to two inches deep.
The core technology of the DPL treatment adopted is Dynamic Toning Technology or D-Light. D-Light is a new kind of light pulse made from a combination of laser and IPL power sources.
With the advantage of its low -influence and high-density energy and speed, D-light is considered the most effective and safe when treating skin conditions.
DPL can treat Rosacea-related facial problems such as redness, spider veins, pigmentation, and spots. It also has an anti-aging effect and can make your skin brighter and reduce pigmentation.
What's the difference between DPL photofacial and IPL photofacial?
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It delivers a broad spectrum of wavelengths through the skin to repair red and damaged areas. When the light energy heats these areas, the cells will disappear and are absorbed into your body, resulting in a more evenly colored complexion.
IPL and DPL are both technologies used for Photo facials, a skin treatment that adopts certain kinds of light-based technology. They are used for fading brown spots and boosting collagen and damaged capillaries.
Benefits of the DPL Photofacial
- DPL photofacial is effective for treating spider veins. Photons passed by the laser are absorbed by the blood cells in the veins. This process generates heat and destroys the blood vessel. The damaged vein shrinks and dissolves with time.
- DPL can heal acne and scars
- DPL can prevent skin aging.
- DPL can effectively lighten skin discoloration and pigmentation.
- DPL can be effective to reduce pore size.
- DPL is the best way to reduce Rosacea.
- DPL restores hydration and moisture to balance skin.
- DPL helps release wrinkles.
- DPL can increase collagen and elastin production.
Why does JOVS have a Sapphire cooling surface area?
Sapphire-based technology can protect the skin surface and prevent heat damage. The laser generates heat so cooling the skin is necessary.
JOVS is made from full-screen ultra-thin sapphire, constant temperature of 5°C to ensure treatments are painless.
Other Benefits
Besides the obvious skin benefits, these are some of the major pros of having an at-home laser device versus going into a clinic:
- More affordable: Long-term use higher cost performance and the same DPL Technology as a beauty salon
- Easy and convenient: 2-3 times a week at home
My Experience with JOVS
I personally find myself much more drawn to this type of technology than say my Medicube (high frequency + ultrasound) or Tripollar (Radiofrequency for skin tightening). It feels much more sophisticated and there's no overheating of the skin, which I feel my Medicube and Tripollar are at risk of committing.
The JOVS device needs to be plugged in while being used and comes with country specific plugs. Just like a professional laser session you need to be wearing the eye goggles provided.
The laser is automatic, so once you select the mode and press the device to your skin, it will flash continuously and has an automatic timer to turn off when done. I haven't timed it, but I believe it lasts between 5-10 mins. It's not a short treatment but not overly long either in my opinion. My ZIIP device treatments can last as long as 20 minutes!
Make sure your skin is throughly clean before using the JOVS device.
After the treatment is over, there's some post-treatment care to be aware of:
- you can apply a hydrating mask or proceed with your skincare, but avoid harsh actives
- avoid washing your face with hot water
- avoid the sun for 48 hours after your treatment.
The pain level of the JOVS device is nowhere near as bad as an in-office treatment. There's some slight discomfort but it's very mild considering you don't apply a topical numbing cream beforehand.
The sapphire cooling surface somehow feels as cold as ice and effectively counteracts the burning sensation from the laser.
I feel like this is a seriously powerful device. Even after just a few sessions I'm noticing a difference in the smoothness and texture of my skin along with more even skin tone.
I generally always have healthy skin thanks to my insane maintenance, so I try not to make claims as who would believe them anyway with all the products and tools I use.
But I'm very familiar with what my baseline is, as high as it may be, and even still, this laser seems to make a difference.
I'll be continuing to monitor my more stubborn skin issues like broken capillaries around my nostrils and dark spots on my cheeks from sun damage.
Do you actually need this skincare device? No. Will it improve your skin? There's a good chance it will. But everyone's skin and skin concerns are so different, you'll never really know, even if you read 100 people's reviews, until you try it yourself.
Thankfully, JOVS has a risk free policy if you are curious about this device.
